Cost Savings (Averaged Over Time)
Earlier today I was thinking about the cost of our goat milk soap (which is $8-12 per bar, depending on the size/type) and I was tempted to think: "Hmmm ... That's kind of expensive." But then I caught myself and realized that, compared to a few short years ago, I'm actually spending a lot less on personal cleansers (taking into account the full retail price for our goat soap).
A few years back this is how much I spent on skin health products (don't judge, y'all):
- Facial cleanser: $35. Lasts 3 months.
- Toner: $30. Lasts 3 months.
- Anti-aging eye gel: $30 😰. Lasted 3 months.
- Liquid exfoliant: $35. Lasted 3 months.
- Natural, chemical free body soap: $10 per bar. At least two bars per month.
- Non-sulfate shampoo: $20 per bottle. At least two bottles per month.
- Natural conditioner: $30 per bottle. At least two bottles per month at least.
That's $91.67 per month, averaged out.
Here are my costs now:
- Large Bar of May Chang and Lavender goat soap: $12 (three bars per month, which I use on my body, face and hair).
- Organic Witch Hazel: $10 / month.
That's $46 per month.
So, for my case, and my needs, that's a cost savings of 50%.
A Minimalist's Dream Come True
As mentioned above, I use this goat milk soap for everything ... body, face and hair. After it sits in my hair and for 5-ish minutes the oils leave it feeling like I used a traditional conditioner. This works great for me as long as my hair is short. As my hair gets longer, I'll add 10-15 drops of Jojoba oil while it's still wet to keep it from getting tangly.
For any of my minimalist brethren out there, you'll understand what a huge win this is. I found a single bar of soap that effectively cleans everything, and leave my skin more healthy than it was before. The simple, natural oils don't strip my skin as typical mass produced soaps tend to do.
So it's faster, cheaper and ultimately more effective. Win, win, win.
I also religiously use our goat soap for regular hand washing -- I need to stay vigilant to keep my pesky eczema at bay. More on that in a future blog article.
That's it for now. Thanks for tuning in.
